E3 2021: What’s Looking Good, Microsoft?

We should begin by laying out some facts right off the bat and acknowledge a few truths about the current situation as it applies to the video game industry, but more specifically E3 2021. The COVID-19 pandemic really hampered so much development by forcing it out of the collaborative spaces of offices and into peoples homes. It also severely disrupted supply lines and manufacturing pipelines to such a degree that every electronics company is grappling with component shortages. Also worth considering is the fact that E3 is a show that’s been desperately searching for an identity for quite some time now, only to really feel the pressure after not having a conference at all last year. Knowing all of that led me to believe that I should temper my expectations for this year, but despite the middling status of E3 as a show, some of the presenters brought some really interesting stuff that I’m actually pretty excited for.

Keep in mind, I don’t really have much of a structure or rule set in mind for how I’m picking these, but I’m going to try and focus on games that were more than a cinematic trailer. No offense to cinematic trailers, but there isn’t really much to talk about with those when compared to games that showed off some actual gameplay footage. So don’t get weird about it when I don’t mention Starfield or whatever. But anyway, here’s what I saw at the Microsoft press conference (are we still calling them that?) from E3 2021 that really piqued my interest.

BATTLEFIELD 2042

It’s been a while since I’ve actually enjoyed a Battlefield game, with Battlefield 3 being the last one that really resonated with me. But before my decline in interest with the series really took hold, I thoroughly enjoyed games like Battlefied 2, Battlefield 2142, and even Battlefield 1943, which doesn’t even mention my fondness for the Bad Company spin-offs. But here we are, staring down the barrel of the Battlefield gun once again, and while I don’t recall anything demonstrably new or revolutionary about this latest entry, I’m intrigued by the footage that seemed to focus in on map hazards like snowstorms, dust storms, and tornadoes. It looks like it could be a cool inclusion in these massive battles, granted it doesn’t become overly tedious after encountering these events a couple of times.

I don’t really know what to expect from Battlefield 2042 except for the fact that there will not be a single player component, which might make it a tricky sell for some folks. Hopefully this Battlefield entry is more welcoming to new and lapsed players, and not just be a cool training exercise for snipers who want to see how quickly they can snipe me after I spawn.

PSYCHONAUTS 2

Man, I loved the original Psychonauts and have been so very excited for the follow up to finally come out. Luckily, I won’t have to wait much longer because it’s coming out at the end of August this year, and will be on Xbox Game Pass. Judging solely off of the trailer shown at the briefing it doesn’t look like Psychonauts 2 is straying too far from the path, vis-à-vis the things that made the original so successful and beloved. The humor seems on point, the art looks just as weird and flamboyant as I remember, and the gameplay looks just as good as I remember the original did (hopefully it’s less cumbersome this time though). The only real difference that I could see was that the levels look a bit larger and more mechanically diverse than in the original, which is a welcome change.

I don’t know what you’re supposed to do to revitalize a long dormant franchise of a cult classic to make it appeal to modern gamers, but I do know that I’m totally on the hook for this psychedelic platformer. And hey, it’s only been like 16 years since the original released, so I’m sure it’ll live up to everyone’s totally reasonable expectations and no one will be upset about anything.

PARTY ANIMALS

Man, I don’t know who’s out there developing games with me explicitly in mind, but I want to thank them so much. Party Animals looks like one of my favorite multiplayer games of all time, Gang Beasts, but like, if Gang Beasts was a bit more polished than it is. I don’t know what else to really say that can entice you more than the trailer can, but if you like silly ragdoll-centric mayhem where everyone is dressed as (or is?) an adorable animal, then we have nothing more to discuss. It’s just a shame that Party Animals isn’t going to be with us until sometime in 2022.

HALO INFINITE

Maybe I’m a fool, but I still want a good Halo game to come out. I’ve enjoyed parts of the past two Halo games, namely some of the single player campaign from 4, and most of the multiplayer from 5, but I would just love to see Halo be the tour de force it used to be once more. Despite the misguided story stuff from 5 though, I’m still kind of invested in these characters and this story that’s spanned more than half of my life at this point.

So later this year we’ll see if all of the complaints and delays really made Halo Infinite a better product than its initial reveal led us to believe. The most exciting developments from the trailer this year easily include the versatility of the grappling hook, which allows you hook onto not only surfaces, but you can pick up weapons and equipment with it and jack vehicles as well. The story bits in the trailer were also real intriguing, with this fake-ass non-Cortana hanging out with my good buddy, Master Chief, as well as the usual haunting occasional narration from Cortana herself. I haven’t checked in on the multiplayer presentation as of writing this, but apparently it is going to be free-to-play, which seems like a smart move to me.

We’ll see if it lives up to expectations when it drops on Game Pass and in retail this holiday season. Because of course they didn’t give it a firm date.

SHREDDERS

Despite having arguably one of the stupidest names for a game, Shredders looks like an extremely chill snowboarding game that I might be into. I’m not a big snowboarder or even a big fan of the outdoors in general, but even I can admit that Shredders looks super fun in a low stakes kind of way. Whereas something like Steep was a little too annoying in that classic Ubisoft way, where like, everyone was making terrible jokes and quipping at you constantly, Shredders seems like it’s going for a more relaxed vibe, trading out chatty NPCs with abject silence, while focusing on a more realistic representation of what it’s like to “shred that gnar.”

Like most of what was shown at the Microsoft event, it too will be coming to Game Pass when it releases later this year on December 12th, just in time for me to be utterly sick of the snow.

REPLACED

I don’t quite know what happened to The Last Night, but if it never comes out which is looking more and more to be the case, at least we can look forward to something like Replaced which might actually come out. Listen, I’m always gonna be here for a cyberpunk-themed side-scroller, but man am I excited for this one. First and foremost, it just looks fucking incredible which would be reason alone for me to try it out, but from what little combat and platforming that was shown, it looks like it won’t just be all flash and no substance.

There isn’t much else to really glean from the trailer itself, but that hasn’t done anything to dampen my excitement or anticipation. And like I said, considering Replaced is slated for release next year and is a day one Game Pass game, I think I can more safely assume it might actually come out. So that’s something.

XBOX GAME PASS

Out of the 30 or so games that were announced and discussed at the Microsoft presentation, I think only like 4 of them aren’t going to be on the Game Pass service, which is really quite impressive. I don’t know that anyone who owns an Xbox would have a tough time justifying signing up for Game Pass before this presentation, but after what was shown, it kind of seems essential to the whole Xbox ecosystem. Obviously that’s the point of what Microsoft has been doing, but they really made a strong case for it the other day. With games like the new Dark Alliance dropping day one later this month, to Microsoft Flight Simulator dropping in July, Psychonauts 2 in August, and plenty of other big name titles headlining each month for the remainder of 2021, I just don’t know how you can resist hopping onboard the Game Pass train.

Microsoft did a big dump of games, and while not everything resonated with me, I was genuinely impressed with how stacked their lineup is, especially considering the kind of year the developers making these games had to endure. Consider me impressed Microsoft. Now if only you could provide some sort of expandable memory for the Xbox Series consoles that didn’t cost $220, that would be just delightful.

Blog: Console Bore – 09/09/20

As of writing this, Microsoft finally saw fit to confirm what might be the worst kept secret in the gaming industry, in announcing the existence of the Xbox Series S, the all digital and budget model of their next console. I could talk about how odd and wildly different from the upcoming Series X it looks, but instead I’d like to add to the cacophony of voices asking, “Should these boxes just be delayed?”

Honestly, I think they should be for a multitude of reasons. First, it’s 2020 and things are a fucking mess with a lot of folks (myself included) out of a job and unable to justify buying a $500+ video game machine. Things are tough out there with people not only possibly being unable to afford the thing, but supply chains being what they currently are might make for a difficult production and distribution pipeline. It’s like if Rolex was trying to pitch me on their newest line of expensive watches where normally I’d say “no thank you,” but trying to sell it to me in this economy is just fucking wild.

Xbox Series X – Microsoft

But maybe you’re Captain Moneybags, sitting upon your throne of gold coins and job offers with plenty of disposable income to throw around. First of all, how about throwing some of that cash my way, and secondly, what are you gonna play on these boxes anyway? Launch lineups are generally pretty forgettable, but this time around it’s downright miserable.

Sony has Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales coming day and date with the PS5, but that’s kind of it. Without a doubt both Microsoft and Sony will get some sports games, some sort of dancing game and an Assassin’s Creed, but that doesn’t seem worth the price of admission to me. Sure I’ll play Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and the Spider-Man game, but the first one I’ll be able to play on my PC or PS4, while the latter is more of an expansion pack that’s built on the same bones as its predecessor. That’s not a dig against these games but there’s nothing that’s jumped out and made me eager to buy a new console.

Playstation 5 & friends – Sony

Then you look at Microsoft who basically just has third party stuff coming out with nothing else to show especially after Halo Infinite got delayed into next year. Like the PS5, they’ll get some sports games, some Ubisoft titles and the next Call of Duty, but they’ve got even less going on than Sony does. Sure they have Game Pass which will allow users to play a variety of stuff, but you can already play those games right now on your current generation of Xbox or a PC.

Maybe by the end of the month both companies will announce some super amazing games that I just have got to play on day one, but as of now there’s like one thing I want to play that’s exclusive in Spider-Man and that’s it. Personally, I wouldn’t mind a cool March release for these bad boys, or even just a full year delay. But it’s expensive to just store product in a warehouse for a year, and it’s unwise to do that with what will be rapidly aging technology. A delay could see a drop in price and a better lineup though, which is something I’m into but these companies certainly will not be.

Blog: Nobody Puts Game Pass in the Corner – 06/12/19

There are tons of different services out there that provide what essentially is, “The Netflix of Games.”  With EA’s Origin Access, the upcoming Google Stadia, the recently announced Ubisoft+, Discord’s Nitro offerings and so on and so forth.  But let me tell you about what might be the best and most exciting one of all, Xbox Game Pass — specifically, the one for PC.

A few days ago at their E3 conference, Microsoft unveiled their $15 a month Game Pass bundle that includes both Xbox and PC Game Passes, plus an Xbox Live subscription.  A few years earlier, they announced their play anywhere initiative, which said that all first party games will be playable on Xbox and PC.  Now that both of these announcements have come and gone, and the Xbox Game Pass PC version (what a name) is available for only $5 a month, it leaves little reason for me to ever own another Xbox again.

But that isn’t the point here.  What is the point is how good the offerings are on the Game Pass PC.  I won’t go through the entire list here, but there are some bangers on here.

ASTRONEER

I really enjoyed Astroneer when it was in early access.  Since it released, I shamefully haven’t tried it out, but I recommend anyone who is looking for a chill space, survival game, immediately check out Astroneer.

GEARS OF WAR 4/ULTIMATE EDITION

With the sequel only a few months away, now’s a great time to revisit the incredibly fun yet forgettable, Gears of War 4.  Admittedly, I never finished it, but, now I have an avenue to do so should I ever want to.

Also, the remaster of the first Gears of War is on the service too.  Just saying.

ORI & THE BLIND FOREST

The incredibly fun and challenging platformer, Ori & The Blind Forest is available too, which is good considering the sequel isn’t too far away and will also be on Game Pass.  Also, this game will make you feel things.  So watch out.

PREY

Prey was always one of those games that I wanted to try but never got around to.  With shades of Bioshock and System Shock poking through, the game offered what many critics considered a fun, yet occasionally terrifying game with a great story.

SHENMUE I&II

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiVbFmlTnec

I won’t attempt to defend Shenmue as a franchise, but it did have some pretty impressive stuff in it for the time.  The clockwork world, quick time events, the densely populated areas where you can interact with everyone.  All of it was ahead of it’s time and deserves that praise.  Was it fun to play though?  Not really.  But you can experience the infamous hunt for sailors for yourself in preparation for the impending sequel.

STATE OF DECAY 2

While State of Decay 2 wasn’t the game for me, I acknowledge that for a lot of people, the zombie survival/management sim that released, was.  It’s a game full of bold ideas, all of which circle around the concept of base building, and personnel management.  Also there’s zombies everywhere.

VAMPYR

I really wanted to try out Vampyr for a while now.  If I remember correctly, you’re a doctor who has been turned into a vampire, and has to investigate something?  I don’t remember.  What I do remember though is that you talk to a bunch of citizens, and shoot werewolves a bunch.  It’s an action RPG in a setting we just don’t get enough of.

WOLFENSTEIN II

I think we as a people need to once again embrace the idea that eradicating Nazis is cool and not taboo.  What better way to remind yourself of that fact, than by playing a game where you go around an alternate history version of America where they lost WW2 and the filthy Nazis took over?  Oh, I should mention that you’re killing them with guns and bombs and stuff in order to free America from the Nazi menace.  It’s fun and patriotic.

Now you might be thinking to yourself, “eh, none of those games did it for me,” and I get that.  But there might be something on the list that might sway you.  And look, I’m not doing this cause I want to advertise the service or anything, this was all spurred on because I genuinely enjoy the service.  That, and the upcoming titles look great.  Let’s take a look, shall we?

HALO INFINITE

Look man, I was gonna play this game one way or another, and knowing that I don’t need to buy a new console to enjoy it is all the better.  When Halo Infinite launches next year, I’ll be there.

HALO THE MASTER CHIEF COLLECTION

What’s that you say?  You don’t need Game Pass till the next Halo launches?  But what about The Master Chief Collection then?  Yeah buddy, you’re gonna get access to that entire package when it begins to roll out in a few months.  Hot damn.

AGE OF EMPIRES I, II & III DEFINITIVE EDITIONS

In the past, I’ve heard people go nuts for this franchise.  I’m actually curious to see what all the fuss is about.  Considering the last actual RTS game I played was Rise of Nations, I’m curious if this will scratch a similar itch.

MICROSOFT FLIGHT SIMULATOR

Shut up, I think it looks cool and fun.  I wanna fly some sick-ass planes and do it in a world powered by Google Maps.  I want to fly a plane over my house and go somewhere nicer, so I pretend I’m leaving here.  Shut up.

That isn’t all of the upcoming games, that list has a few more on it.  But more interestingly is what games they don’t have announced, that they’ll add to the service.  Only a few days ago, critically acclaimed new releases like Void Bastards and The Outer Wilds were added to the list, so you never know what new game is going to make the cut.

Out of all of the available services, Xbox Game Pass PC has the best selection of games that I want to play on it.  Also, I think it’s the cheapest of the offerings at only $4.99 a month.  I’m enjoying Game Pass, and I just wanted to sing it’s praises a bit as we become more and more over encumbered with similar services.

E3 2019: Microsoft

Microsoft took the stage at this year’s E3 with what might be the most exciting and interesting lineup of games, hardware and services.  With so many of their initiatives coming to a head, between streaming services, announced games from purchased studios, possibly new hardware reveals, and the fact that their main competition isn’t attending the show, Microsoft has nowhere to go but up.

Preamble aside, this is what they brought to the biggest stage in gaming this year that caught my eye.

THE OUTER WORLDS

They opened the show with some new footage from The Outer Worlds, the Obsidian, Fallout style first-person RPG.  Personally, I’m not a big fan of the Bethesda style game, but the setting and scope of the game itself was a very attractive prospect.

The sci-fi trappings of this first person action RPG looks right up my alley aesthetically, and the gun play looks like it didn’t suck, which would be a nice change from every Fallout game. Also, I watched the player just shoot a quest giver in the chest, so this game looks like a blast.  It comes out October 25th of this year.

BLEEDING EDGE

Next up was Ninja Theory’s, Bleeding Edge.  It’s a 4v4 melee focused competitive multiplayer game.  It looks like a blend of Borderlands, Overwatch and For Honor.  There wasn’t much in the way of details, except that it has attitude.  Gnarly.

ORI AND THE WILL OF THE WISPS

The sequel to the very good Ori and the Blind Forest was once again, shown off, boasting it’s signature beautiful art style and tight platforming.  In this short trailer, there wasn’t much in the way of information, but if it follows in the footsteps of it’s predecessor while iterating on some of the more irritating aspects of the game, then this could be a homerun.  It’s out February 11th of 2020.

MINECRAFT DUNGEONS

Next we were onto that Minecraft game that’s a dungeon crawler, apltly named Minecraft Dungeons.  It’s a 4 player coop dungeron crawler that looks neat.  I think the art style works with the isometric camera, and I gotta hand it to them, it’s a fairly cool concept that works well within the world of Minecraft.  It’s due out next spring.

STAR WARS JEDI: FALLEN ORDER

We got to see more of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, but there wasn’t much in the way of new footage.  Instead, it looked as if it was made from the full demo they showed yesterday at EA Play, chopping it down into a more bite sized and exciting package.  There were flashes of new footage, but nothing that really expanded on what was shown at EA Play.  It releases November 11th of this year.

BLAIR WITCH

They showed off this spooky trailer with a dude running into a shack in the woods, where he was definitely going to die.  There was also an adorable dog that traveled with him, that I’m sure is going to die, which makes this game an instant pass and also it gets 0/5 stars for even putting that idea in my head.  That’s the official review for a game that comes out on August 30th.

CYBERPUNK 2077

The very anticipated Cyberpunk 2077 made an appearance in the form of what I assume is a cut scene in the game, it’s hard to know for sure though.  There were lots of half robot people with guns, a self driving car, a robo-fist-fight between two men, lots of bleeping out of the bad words, a woman who can hack with her mind, and KEANU REEVES.  And then Keanu Reeves, not content with blowing the minds of everyone for just being in the game, walked out on stage.

He was charming and wonderful and is precious and I love him.  The crowd was eating it up, and so was he.  Then he gave us the release date by striking an emphatic pose while pointing to the big screen that flashed to some more gameplay, quickly followed by an April 16th, 2020 release date.

I am very excited about Cyberpunk 2077 as a fairly recent convert to the camp of CD Projekt Red, and as you can probably guess, the grimy sci-fi aesthetic is definitely my jam.

BATTLETOADS

Hell yeah baby, the Battletoads are back and they look like a Disney Afternoon cartoon.  It’s a 3 person co-op brawler that has no release date.  Hopefully, it’ll be as good as I remember Castle Crashers being.  Realistically, it’ll be the best Battletoads game, but that isn’t saying much.

ID@XBOX MONTAGE/GAME PASS

A bunch of games were announced and highlighted in this ID@XBOX game montage.  A lot of the stuff looked really cool and up my alley.  I plan on investigating some of these games more in-depth at some point, but for now, just enjoy the trailer.

The montage was followed with the news that the games in the montage were all going to launch day and date on Xbox Game Pass.

They also announced that the entire Master Chief Collection is coming to game pass on PC, along with the news that the PC game pass launched today, and they’re bundling both Game Passes and Xbox Live Gold for $14.99.  Which honestly, is a pretty great deal.

MICROSOFT FLIGHT SIMULATOR

Powered by Google Maps, there was a lot of pomp and circumstance around this iteration of Flight Simulator, and honestly, it looks absolutely solid and something that I could definitely see myself dumping an obscene amount of time into.

I’ve never been a big, “plane guy,” but I am definitely a, “seemingly mundane simulator game guy,” and this speaks to me in that regard.

THEY BOUGHT DOUBLEFINE PRODUCTIONS/PSYCONAUTS 2

With the announcement that Microsoft had purchased Double Fine, they celebrated their union by showing us a new trailer for Psychonauts 2.  The game itself looks just as phenomenal as I’d hope, and seems like it’s striking the right tone while boasting a fairly interesting story for the follow up to one of my personal favorite games.

Psychonauts is easily one of my favorite games based on it’s tight gameplay, and great humor.  Hopefully, almost 15 years later, the sequel can illicit similar feelings.

DRAGON BALL Z KAKAROT

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uy9FuthWVkE

HELL YEAH SON, THEY SHOWED OFF THAT GOKU GAME.  It looks dope as hell, and it would be the ten thousandth time I’ve experienced the first 100 episodes of that show.  I know nothing about the game, how it plays, how progression works, how many sagas are represented in it, but I’m definitely getting this game.

12 MINUTES

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7h5kBrSqnbc

Anapurna came to show a game that revolves around a time loop and an emotional and gut wrenching story.  It looks like you’re reliving the same time loop over and over in an attempt to get it right and not watch your wife die.  It’s being billed as an “interactive thriller,” which means I’ll probably really like it and confuse my friends by talking about it so much.  Or, it’ll suck.  Who knows?  It’s coming soon apparently.

GEARS OF WAR 5

So they started off this Gears of War 5 trailer with some slight body horror stuff that was very uncomfortable to look at, and I’m not sure if Bound By Blood is the subtitle or just a catchphrase about the game, but whatever.  After that profoundly disturbing sequence, it was clear that this presentation wasn’t about the story mode.

Instead, they blasted off some fireworks for a while and then zoomed in under the stage to show off a multiplayer mode that has you and your team plant a bomb in an enemy base and then escape from said base.  It sure seemed like a lot of production and effort to go into just to show off a new mode, but whatever.  Also, there were wrestlers under the stage who were gonna play the mode on Mixer, so that was bizarre.

Then there was a hip hop remix of Crazy Train that featured Lil’ Jon, I think?  There was also a character who pulled out an electric knife and stabbed a bunch of fools which looked cool, but since it’s a CG trailer, who knows how it’ll actually play?  From said electro-knife lady, I assume that this mode is a class-based affair, and one person is the gun-man, and there’s lady-knife, and probably bomb-dude or something.  But that could be just me projecting.

It’s a three player focused co-op mode that looks interesting, but didn’t seem worth all the effort they put into showing it off.  It all felt disjointed and weird and also if you preorder you can play as a Terminator.  So never mind about the disjointed thing, this entire sequence was never “jointed” to begin with.

It releases on September 10th this year and can be played a few days early by buying the expensive edition or playing via Game Pass.

ELITE CONTROLLER II

They announced a new Elite Controller with more features, dongles, Bluetooth, a rechargeable battery and charging dock.  It all seemed like smart innovations and needed redesigns, but will probably also be expensive as hell.

I really want an Elite Controller, but cannot justify paying $150 for a controller, no matter how good it is.

DYING LIGHT 2

A new trailer for the very exciting Dying Light 2 was shown off, focusing on choices and “remembering who you are” and other ethical quandaries.  I saw a zombie climb the player like a ladder, so that’s uncool and definitely not welcome.

I liked Dying Light a whole bunch, but I felt like I lacked any agency and also hated the weapon durability system, although, to be fair, it wasn’t as egregious as it could’ve been.  Still, I hate that mechanic in games, but for Dying Light 2, I can make an exception.

Also it’s out next year.

FORZA HORIZON 4

They rolled out a sports car made of Lego pieces to promote Forza Horizon 4 and their upcoming crossover with the toy manufacturer.  Yes, Lego.  Everything was Lego, people, cars, animals, fences, and other stuff were all made of those delightful little bricks.  Not since Forza Horizon partnered with Hot Wheels, have I been more curious about playing a Forza game.  It looks like a lot of fun and will be available on June 13th.

GEARS POP!

Bad.  All of this is bad.  It’s a mobile game in the vein of Clash Royale and looks terrible.  Seriously, it looks gross, and appears to be little more than an attempt to suck money out of people.  Also, Funko Pop figures are ugly and terrible.

PHANTASY STAR ONLINE 2

For a long time, a lot of people have been clamoring for this MMO to finally get localized and get a proper western release.  I have no reverence for Phantasy Star Online or the MMO genre in general, so this doesn’t seem like anything I’d be interested in.  It comes out next year and is exclusively coming to Xbox.

BORDERLANDS 3

I’ve made my thoughts on Borderlands as a series clear, and this trailer didn’t do much to change them.  It looks exactly like what you’d expect from a sequel to Borderlands 2, which I guess is what people want.  But in an age where games like Destiny and The Division exist, I’m curious to see how Borderlands 3 does against other loot shooters.  I just wish they would have tried to do some more interesting things as opposed to just doubling down on what’s worked in the past.

They also released a new piece of DLC for Borderlands 2 to link the stories of the two games, which I’m pretty sure is free.

It comes out September 13th of this year.

GEORGE R.R. DARK SOULS (ELDEN RING)

With no gameplay and just an ambiguous as hell CG trailer, it sure felt like something both From Software and Georgie boy would make.

I don’t have any love for either From Software or the throne man himself, Mr. R.R. Martin, and this detail-packed trailer did nothing to sway those feelings.

STREAMING

They were extremely brief and vague when it came to their streaming initiative, Project X-Cloud, but it sounds like it’s launching this year, and you can even use your Xbox One as a sort of home streaming device, allowing you to stream to other devices on the same WiFi connection.

NEW CONSOLE

There was a lot of hype and boasting about the technology and connectivity around the next Xbox console to kick of this next segment.  Focusing in on the more tech heavy bullet points like the processor in the console, ray tracing support, SSD inclusion, backwards compatibility and so on and so forth.  No real visual element aside from various studio heads talking about how powerful this technology is.

The way they’re positioning this next console seems to be a direct response to how the Xbox One was lambasted upon reveal.  Instead of superfluous features, they chose to focus on performance, and how it’s for games and gamers.  Nothing about TV or movies which, while it almost definitely will support other forms of entertainment, won’t be a focus at all.

Releasing holiday of 2020, we didn’t get a name aside from the code name, Project Scarlet.

HALO INFINITE

Announced as a Project Scarlet launch title, we were treated to what I assume is a cut-scene from the game Halo Infinite.  All I can surmise from this trailer is that, once again, things are bad, and Master Chief got saved by someone so that he can save everyone else.  Also he misses he digital, blue, cyber-girlfriend who lived in his head for a while until she went bonkers.

And just like that, you now know the entire plot to all of Halo.

Then everything ended.  It all just stopped.  And not one mention of Fable at all!  Sure we got Keanu Reeves, but I really, really wanted the Fable rumors to bear fruit.  It’s all exciting stuff, but doesn’t solve the issue of big releases this year.  They’ve got Gears coming this year, but not much else.

It really felt like the entire Xbox brand is just going to lay low for a while, restructuring it’s offerings and services, so that they can come back next winter to release an incredibly, fully featured console.

But next year, it seems like Microsoft is gonna hit consumers hard and make sure people feel good about the brand by the time the next console drops.

Blog: The Guessing Game of E3 2019 – 05/29/19

In less than two weeks time we’ll be waist deep in the bog that is E3 once again.  There are plenty of conversations that we could have about the obsolescence of the conference itself, but for the time being, I just want to scrounge together a sort of wish list for the event.  With several companies not attending, including Sony, and the knowledge of a new console generation right around the corner, this year is probably going to be fairly lite in terms of big announcements.

I could probably just write the word “games” over and over, but I just want to hit on like one or two things from each conference that I’d like to see.

MICROSOFT

Microsoft is kicking off E3 with their conference, in what I think could be the most interesting conference of the entire show.  It’s no secret that the Xbox One didn’t set the world on fire and was easily overtaken by the PlayStation 4 in terms of market share.  Since their rocky launch, they’ve tried to right the ship since then by taking a very pro-consumer stance with their ‘Play Anywhere’ initiative, which allows for Xbox exclusives to be playable on Windows, their push to make online games allow players on any console to play with each other, and my personal favorite, the Xbox Adaptive Controller, which brings accessibility to a whole new level.

I’m genuinely excited to see what the next generation looks like under this new era of Xbox, but till then, I’m gonna just list some stuff I would love to see out of them this year.

FABLE 4

For my money, if Fable 4 came out and incorporated a large world, devoid of loading screens, with the fun yet admittedly shallow combat from Fable 2, I’d be happy.  The Fable franchise has always traded on cheeky humor and robust world building, but I think it would be nice if we could make good on some of those promises that Peter Molyneux made back before the first Fable came out, and include more of those clockwork systems that make the world feel more alive.

HALO INFINITE

Look, I don’t know what they’re planning with Halo Infinite, but regardless of if it’s the conclusion to the story we’ve all wanted or a big pile of garbage, I just want to know.  Just let me play this game and move on with my life.  It’s not like I’ve been waiting a terribly long time, but I think I’m just so exhausted with Halo, that I just want it to be over with.  If it was good, that’d be great, but even if it isn’t, I just need to know.

NEW CONSOLE

I swear, if this next console isn’t just called the Xbox Two, I’m gonna lose my shit.  Although in all fairness, it would be absolutely hilarious if they just called this thing like “XCUBE” or “ULTRABOX.”  I don’t know that I’m ready for a new console generation, but I don’t really have a choice in the matter.  Regardless, I’d like some functionality stuff to be talked about.  Are we doing a disc drive?  Do all the Xbox One games work?  How about the accessories like controllers?  How big of a deal is streaming?  Just some cool bullet points would be great.

BETHESDA

Look, I don’t like Bethesda games that much.  They’ve all felt janky to me in one way or another, and I never got into any of the settings they played around in.  I’m not a big post-apocalypse guy, and even less of a high fantasy fella, so I’ve basically eliminated most of their modern lineup.  That said…

STARFIELD

What I wouldn’t give for any information about this game.  I know that this is behind Elder Scrolls IV in the queue, and almost certainly wont be on this current generation of consoles, but a man can dream.

I’m just looking for something that can vaguely fill that Mass Effect sized hole in my heart.  While I hate that Bethesda stands the best chance at this moment, I have to stay hopeful that a good sci-fi action RPG that let’s me shoot aliens or bone down with them is somewhere on the horizon.

AN APOLOGY

Imagine it; Todd Howard walks on stage with his head hung low.  He steps up to the lone microphone on the stage with a single house light shining upon it.  Andrew W.K. is notably not there, or if he is, he’s singing a dramatic and somber version of one of his party songs.  Todd clears his throat and speaks into the mic with tears in his eyes.  “We fucked up, y’all.  We really goobered it up on this one.  Fallout 76?  Yeah, we did a bad on that.”  Then he eats a canvas bag that says Fallout 76 on it, and melts into a puddle.

UBISOFT

Man, I really like the turn that Ubisoft has had this generation.  They’ve stuck with their games in a way that very few developers do, and cultivate these lively communities around their games.  For Honor, Rainbow Six Siege, The Division 2, and Ghost Recon Wildlands just to name a few.  I’m pretty stoked to see what they do this year.

SOME PATENTLY CRAZY CONFERENCE BULLSHIT

For those not in the loop, Ubisoft has the fucking most wild press conferences ever.  Usually there’s people in costumes dancing, a game of laser tag in the auditorium, and Mr. Caffeine, the strangest man ever.  Ubisoft, whether intentionally or not, has made their conference twice as exciting by just being themselves.

SPLINTER CELL

I will forever ask for another one of these.  I love Splinter Cell, with Splinter Cell Chaos Theory being one of my favorite games of all time, it’s been upsetting to see Ubisoft shove Sam Fisher and his cool goggles into a closet.  I want another one of these games.  I thought Blacklist was cool, but it didn’t scratch the itch I needed it to.  I’m ready to see Sam Fisher snap necks and hang from the ceiling like he did in the old days.

WATCH DOGS 3

If I can’t have Splinter Cell, give me this instead.  The lack of an Assassin’s Creed this year along with a ton of rumors about the next Watch Dogs taking place in London, all lend credence to the almost inevitable announcement of Watch Dogs 3.  The rumor of it being set in London makes me even happier, considering one of the biggest issues with Watch Dogs 2, was how flippantly your character went from graffiti enthusiast, to armed assassin.  Setting the game in a place without guns adds to the likelihood that more focus will be put on the puzzle aspects of the game, rather than the shooty shooty killing part of it.  Don’t get me wrong, I liked Watch Dogs 2, but I think they did themselves a disservice by letting you use shotguns and pistols.

THE OTHER STUFF

Ubisoft is really good about the, “one more thing” part of E3.  They announce some big sequels, along with some really intriguing new franchises.  I’d like a progress update on Beyond Good & Evil 2, maybe see what other Nintendo collaborations they have up their sleeves, or even see them tackle some more sports in a follow up to Steep.  Ubisoft has my attention most of the time, except for that boat game they announced.  I don’t give a damn about their pirate thing.

SQUARE ENIX

I… I don’t really know.  I guess people really wanna see that Final Fantasy 7 remake, but I just could not give less of a shit.  I genuinely do not know what to even ask for here.  I’m looking at their Wikipedia page, and maybe like, 5 games are jumping out at me.

They probably aren’t doing another Tomb Raider just yet, Thief and Sleeping Dogs are basically dead at this point, and they just released Just Cause 4 last year.  Aside from Life is Strange, they’ve really got nothing I want.  Although according to their Wikipedia page, that untitled Avengers project is still a thing, and I haven’t played a good superhero game in a very long time.

Aside from that, I can’t really think of anything I want from them.  Surprise me, Square Enix.  Surprise me.

NINTENDO

Alright, here’s the situation: Nintendo already announced two games that I’m very excited for, and a bunch of others that mean relatively little to me.  I have no doubt that something will catch my attention during their Nintendo Direct, but here’s what I’d like.

MARIO 2 STYLE IN MARIO MAKER 2

Like, just fucking do it Miyamoto.  Do the thing we all want for once, and put the game in the other game.  Mario Maker 2 looks fantastic, and seems to be fixing a lot of the shortcomings of it’s predecessor, so just fucking do the damn thing.

ANYTHING ABOUT ANIMAL CROSSING

Please?

MARIO RPG

I know I’ll never get a sequel to Super Mario RPG on the Super Nintendo, but how about another Paper Mario game?  We’ve done enough of those Mario & Luigi games that were fine, but hit me with the big one.  Give me another Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door or something.  You did the Mario and Rabbids thing, and that surprisingly worked out pretty well.  So just do this thing for me, okay?

CONTINUE TO NEVER GIVE WALUIGI ANYTHING

Fuck Waluigi.

That’s what I’ve got so far, maybe next week I’ll look into some of the companies that aren’t doing conferences, and grossly speculate about what they could make, if they had to listen to me.

We Watched The Microsoft Press Briefing | E3 2018

Grab your game passes and get your asses in line, cause it’s Microsoft time.

microsoft-e3-2018-halo-infinite-902x507

Halo Infinite

No real info given outside of a trailer.  Seems as if they’re launching a platform for Halo as well as a campaign.  It’s unclear as to what makes this different enough to not call it Halo 6, but I’m definitely intrigued.

ori-and-the-will-of-the-wisps-cinematic-tool-video-optimal

Ori & The Will of the Wisps

Following up the tremendous Ori & The Blind Forest is  something that very much appears like its predecessor with enhanced combat and more mobility options.  Not much info was given here aside from a general tone piece and some gameplay.

sekiro-shadows-die-twice-xbox-e3-893x507

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Initially I thought this was a Dark Souls-esque re-imagining of the Tenchu series.  While I wasn’t too far off, it has a different name and seem to have more exploration and mobility options.  Here we have something that invokes Bloodborne and God of War.  Time will tell if it’s as gross as those games, but it definitely is trying.

fallout76_teaser_vaultsuit_1527685282

Fallout 76

It appears all the rumors were true and this is prequel to all other games.  It’s said to be 4 times the size of Fallout 4 and is a base building focused multiplayer game.  No surprises here.  More to come when we see it at the Bethesda Briefing.

awesomeadventuresofcaptainspirit

The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit

This is billed as a story in the same universe of Life is Strange, but not featuring the same characters.  With a focus on a young boy and his imagination, it looks like you’ll be seeing a bunch of fantastical stories with different settings, featuring him.  It’s releasing for free on June 26th.

crackdown-3_horizontal_1400

Crackdown 3

Terry Crews is yelling a lot, while a virtual Terry Crews is blowing shit up, and driving up walls.  Nothing else really revealed.  Allegedly releasing early next year.

whf_header

We Happy Few

We Happy Few seems to have pivoted from its survival roots and has become more story focused.  It shares a weird vibe with the Bioshock series which isn’t a bad thing.  I personally prefer this approach to their original pitch, but I don’t think I’m breaking any new ground with that one.  It’s out on August 10th.

The Division 2

They’re going for it with the setting and story.  Shit went real bad in Washington DC apparently.  It looks really good graphically but didn’t do much to differentiate itself from the original.  From what I gather the end of the trailer sets up the idea that you and your friends can storm other player run bases.

ID@Xbox

This was just one of those classic “indie game montages.”  I went ahead and picked out the games that looked interesting.

  • Afterparty
  • Outerwilds
  • Below
  • Conquerors Blade
  • Raji
  • Planet Alpha
  • Islands of Nine
  • Harold Halibut
  • The Wind Road
  • Ashen
  • Sable

Shadow of The Tomb Raider

What else can I say about this game?  If you liked the previous games or the Uncharted series, this is probably a safe bet as far as games you’ll enjoy.  If it builds upon the already rock solid formula of its predecessors, we’ll be in for another fantastic entry in the series.

Session.

Totally got my hopes up for Skate 4.  But where EA refuses to deliver, smaller studios will step in.  That’s what’s happening with Session.  I’ve played the very early demo they put out a while ago and I wasn’t terribly impressed.  Hopefully there have been big improvements since I’ve played it and it will fill that skateboard shaped hole in my heart.

maxresdefault2

Tunic

This game still looks out of this fucking world.  It’s a Zelda-esque, isometric action-adventure game that looks charming as all hell.  I humbly request that Tunic is released this moment.

Dying Light 2

More parkour, more zombies.  Actually they really didn’t show any zombies, there was way more human drama.  I prefer the focus on the people rather than the zombies, honestly.  There’s a big focus on player choice, for example they showed dialogue options that effect your standing with various factions, which in turn, effect the world and missions you do.

Battletoads

No footage to show, but it has 3 player co-op.  So yeah.

xrs16yg9ji0wmilqg90t

Just Cause 4

It’s Just Cause.  You know what this game is.  It might as well be called “Grappling Hooks and Explosions” at this point.  It looked pretty neat, although then again, so did JC3.  They showed a tornado, so that could be fun.

gears_pop_lineup_full_logo-0

Gears Pop!

What if Gears of war, but Funko Pop and on phones?  Huh?  I guess that’s what this is.  God help us all.

gears-tactics-2

Gears Tactics

Looks like a tower defense, X-Com looking game.  They really breezed through this announcement.

chrome 6/10/2018 , 11:30:57 PM (2) Xbox - Twitch - Google Chrome

Gears 5

No “of War” on these games.  It’s perplexing.  They’re really leaning into the story with this trailer, and as someone who has not finished Gears of War 4, I have no idea what’s going on.  But it looks like a personal journey featuring the lady from Gears of War 4.  It looks nice and has cover shooting.

Cyberpunk 2077

I wasn’t a huge fan of The Witcher 3 mostly because of its setting.  Cyberpunk 2077 seems to be everything I wanted out of the Witcher, but with more guns and neon.  Sign me the hell up.
